The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Canvas Board VS Stretched Canvas for Your Art

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Canvas Board VS Stretched Canvas for Your Art

Artists have been using canvas for centuries as a support for their paintings. It is a versatile material that allows for a wide range of techniques and styles. However, when it comes to choosing the right canvas for your artwork, you may be faced with a choice between a canvas board and a stretched canvas. Both options have their pros and cons, and which one you choose will depend on your specific needs and preferences. In this article, we will explore the differences between a canvas board and a stretched canvas, their advantages and disadvantages, and what to look for when buying them.   What is a Canvas Board and How is it Different from a Stretched Canvas A canvas board is a rigid board made of various materials such as cardboard, fiberboard, or hardboard, that is coated with canvas. The canvas is typically glued to the board, creating a surface that is ideal for painting. Canvas boards come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures, and are often used by artists who prefer to work on a flat surface.   A stretched canvas, on the other hand, is a piece of canvas that is stretched over a wooden frame, creating a three-dimensional surface that is ideal for painting. The canvas is typically stapled to the wooden frame, creating a tight, drum-like surface that is perfect for oil or acrylic paints. Stretched canvases also come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and textures, and are often used by artists who prefer to work on a more traditional surface.   The main difference between a canvas board and a stretched canvas is the surface on which you will be painting. A canvas board is a flat surface that is ideal for painting with watercolors, gouache, or other mediums that do not require a textured surface. A stretched canvas, on the other hand, provides a textured surface that is ideal for oil or acrylic paints.   Pros & Cons of Using a Canvas Board VS Stretched Canvas for Your Artwork Canvas boards and stretched canvases both have their advantages and disadvantages, and which one you choose will depend on your specific needs and preferences.   Pros of Using a Canvas Board:   Affordability: Canvas boards are typically less expensive than stretched canvases, making them a great option for artists who are just starting out or who are on a tight budget. Portability: Canvas boards are lightweight and easy to transport, making them ideal for artists who like to paint en plein air or who need to work in a small space. Stability: Because canvas boards are rigid, they do not warp or sag like stretched canvases can, making them ideal for artists who want a stable surface to work on.   Cons of Using a Canvas Board   Lack of Texture: Canvas boards do not have the same texture as stretched canvases, which can be a disadvantage for artists who prefer to work with oil or acrylic paints. Durability: Canvas boards are less durable than stretched canvases, and can be more prone to damage if not handled carefully.   Pros of Using a Stretched Canvas   Texture: Stretched canvases provide a textured surface that is ideal for oil or acrylic paints, allowing for a greater range of techniques and styles. Durability: Stretched canvases are more durable than canvas boards, and can withstand more wear and tear over time. Professional Appearance: Stretched canvases have a more professional appearance than canvas boards, and are often preferred by artists who want to sell their work.   Cons of Using a Stretched Canvas   Cost: Stretched canvases can be more expensive than canvas boards, especially if you need a large or custom-sized canvas. Portability: Stretched canvases are not as portable as canvas boards, and can be difficult to transport.   What to Look for When Buying a Stretched Canvas or Canvas Board   When buying a stretched canvas or canvas board, there are a few key factors to consider to ensure you are choosing the right option for your artwork.   Size and Shape   The first thing to consider when buying a stretched canvas or canvas board is the size and shape. Both options come in a variety of sizes and shapes, from small squares to large rectangles, so it's important to choose the right size and shape for your specific artwork. Consider the dimensions of your painting and choose a canvas that is slightly larger than your artwork, to allow for stretching or framing.     Texture:   If you prefer a textured surface for your artwork, a stretched canvas is the way to go. When choosing a stretched canvas, pay attention to the type of texture it provides. Some stretched canvases have a very fine texture, while others have a more pronounced texture. Choose the texture that best suits your artistic style and the medium you will be using.   For canvas boards, consider the texture of the board itself. Some canvas boards have a smooth surface, while others have a more textured surface. Consider the medium you will be using and choose a canvas board with the appropriate texture.   Quality:   The quality of the canvas and the materials used to create the canvas are also important factors to consider when buying a stretched canvas or canvas board. Look for canvases that are made from high-quality materials, such as cotton or linen, and avoid cheaper options made from synthetic materials.   When buying a stretched canvas, pay attention to the quality of the wooden frame. Choose a frame that is sturdy and well-constructed, with no visible knots or defects.   For canvas boards, pay attention to the quality of the board itself. Look for boards that are sturdy and well-made, with no visible defects or warping.   Learn more: How to Choose A Right Canvas for Your Painting   Different Types of Artists Who Prefer to Use Either a Stretched Canvas or A Canvas Board   Different types of artists prefer to use either a stretched canvas or a canvas board, depending on their artistic style, medium, and personal preferences.   Artists who prefer stretched canvases:    Oil and acrylic painters: Stretched canvases provide a textured surface that is ideal for oil and acrylic paints, allowing for a greater range of techniques and styles.   Professional artists: Stretched canvases have a more professional appearance than canvas boards, making them ideal for artists who want to sell their work.   Studio artists: Stretched canvases are ideal for artists who have a dedicated studio space, as they are less portable than canvas boards. Artists who prefer canvas boards:   Watercolor and gouache painters: Canvas boards provide a flat surface that is ideal for watercolors, gouache, and other mediums that do not require a textured surface.   Plein air painters: Canvas boards are lightweight and easy to transport, making them ideal for artists who like to paint en plein air.   Budget-conscious artists: Canvas boards are typically less expensive than stretched canvases, making them a great option for artists who are just starting out or who are on a tight budget.   Choosing between a canvas board and a stretched canvas ultimately comes down to personal preference, artistic style, and the medium you will be using. The degree of excellence and price are second only to mink hair.Other animal hair: It is common in various domestic brushes and can be used in both traditional Chinese painting and watercolor painting. All the above aspects are weaker, and my own subjective feeling seems that the life span is shorter than the above two, and it is easy to wear out and lose hair after a period of time. Artificial fiber wool: It has nothing to recommend except cheap. The Different Shapes & Sizes of Watercolor Brushes to Suit Your Painting Style The type of brush used can make a huge difference in the outcome of a painting. Watercolor brushes come in many shapes and sizes, each with its own characteristics and benefits. Knowing which brush to use for a particular painting style can help create beautiful works of art. There are various shapes of pen heads to meet different painting requirements, such as round head pen, square pen, stick solid pen, bevel pen, fan head pen, long head pen, etc. The shape of the round pen is similar to the traditional Chinese brush, and classical painters often use round pens; The square pen has a square corner shape cut by a knife, and the brush stroke has a clear edge; The fan-shaped pen is suitable for drawing transitional, soft and inconspicuous squares. Round head brush: the most practical, most commonly used and most widely used type. Flat head brush: It can draw special strokes, and is more commonly used when drawing water. Blade brush: it’s used to draw special strokes, such as tree branches. Fan pen: is used to draw special strokes, which can make a very soft transition effect. When buying a pen, there will be a number to distinguish the size, but the actual size of the number corresponding to different brands and different series is different, so the actual size shall prevail. Generally speaking, if you are painting a 16k picture, the length of the brush tip used for coloring can be about 1.5 to 2.0cm; The brush used for painting background can be larger, ranging from 2.0 to 2.5cm. How to Choose A Suitable Watercolor Brush The watercolor brush is the most important tool for painters to paint. Most painting works are painted by brush. Different coatings have different coating properties. You need to know the shape of the brush nib, the size of the brush model, the quality of the brush and other relevant factors to determine the selection of the watercolor brush that suits your needs. Shape of brush nib in watercolor painting There are various shapes of nibs to meet different painting requirements, such as round head nib, square nib, stick solid nib, bevel nib, fan head nib, long head nib, etc. The shape of the round nib is similar to the traditional Chinese brush, and classical painters often use round nibs; The square nib has a square corner shape cut by a knife, and the brush stroke has a clear edge; The fan-shaped nib is suitable for drawing transitional, soft and inconspicuous squares. Size of brush model All kinds of brushes have different sizes. Generally, they are arranged in numbers from small to large. The hair of the smallest brush from No. 1 to No. 10 is large and flat, suitable for painting a wide area. Quality of the brush The quality of the brush depends on the raw materials used and the level of production technology. The selection of brush should be determined according to the requirements of different painting varieties and techniques. A high-quality brush should not lose its hair, and it can still maintain its original shape after use and wear. The watercolor brush usually uses a soft brush. Most watercolor brushes are pointed and round. The West believes that the best brush is made of the hair of the tail tip of the Saber animal. This kind of paintbrush is very expensive. The watercolor paintbrush can also be made of squirrel hair and bull hair. This is a good substitute for mink hair, but its elasticity is poor. Now there are pens made of various synthetic materials, usually nylon or nylon mixed with mink hair. They have poor color retention performance and are not suitable for painting large areas of color, but they are good for painting details and are cheap. There are many styles of watercolor brushes. Only through use can we decide which style and model is more suitable for personal habits. Because the brush can be washed at any time when painting, watercolor painting does not need many brushes. In most cases, three to four brushes are enough, and many four companies only use two brushes. Tips on How to Care Your Watercolor Brush The watercolor pigment can be fully washed with water. Shake the animation pen up and down in the water, and you can wash away the paint sticking to the root of the brush hair. The watercolor paintbrush shall be fully dried and stored, otherwise it may become moldy. In addition, although the nylon wool brush has a large elastic waist and is suitable for drawing sharp lines, the tip of the brush is easy to curl if it is not well preserved. Curled bristles will improve after being washed with hot water. When saving brushes, pay special attention to reducing the burden of the pen tip. Of course, the residual paint in the brush tip will gradually damage the brush hair if it is not cleaned. You can also use pen soap for deep cleaning. In this article, we will discuss some tips on how to creat a perfect watercolor palette for your projects. What is a Watercolor Palette Watercolor palette, as the name implies, is a flat surface used to mix and use fresh paint. Palette is the starting point for artists to create. It is difficult to determine the generation time of palette, but as a necessary tool for oil painting, it can represent the artist's personality and work spirit. Some painters use color palettes to make color drafts before coloring, to explore the structural relationship of large colors, and then transfer these colors to the screen in sufficient quantity. A Comprehensive Guide to Different Types of Watercolor Palettes Watercolor painting is a beautiful art form that requires the right tools and materials. One of the most important elements of any watercolor painting is the palette. A watercolor palette can come in various shapes, sizes, and materials to suit the needs of any artist. This guide will provide an overview of different types of watercolor palettes, including plastic palettes, ceramic palettes, synthetic resin palettes, children's palettes, and metal aluminum acrylic palettes. We will discuss their characteristics and benefits so you can choose the best one for your needs. Watercolor painting is a popular form of art that requires the use of a variety of different palettes. There are many types of watercolor palettes available on the market, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Overall characteristics of plastic palette: various styles, some with cover to prevent dust, and some with grid to put paint. Some have good water film and some have no water film. Generally, it may be slightly stained, but it can also be washed with toothpaste, which has little impact. Overall, it was pretty good. Plastic palettes are lightweight and portable, making them ideal for travel. The ceramic palette is characterized by good water film, easy to wash, but heavy weight. Children at home are not recommended to use it to prevent children from falling and being injured. Small realistic paintings are suitable for use, and do not need to be painted in large areas. In addition, the price is relatively expensive. There are also ceramic plates without checks and patterns on the market, which are suitable for color mixing in large areas. Ceramic palettes provide an even surface for blending colors, while synthetic resin palettes offer durability and strength. Children's palettes are designed to be easy to use and often feature bright colors or fun shapes. Metal aluminum acrylic palettes provide a smooth surface for creating artwork but can be more expensive than other options. No matter what type of watercolor palette you choose, it is important to select one that meets your specific needs so you can create beautiful works of art! How to Create Your Own Customized Watercolor Palette for Every Occasion Creating a custom watercolor palette can be a great way to express your creativity and add unique touches to your artwork. If you are very clean and organized when painting, the flower-shaped color palette will be very suitable for you. If you like to be free and do what you want, you may prefer a palette without barriers. If you are between the two, choose the type with both small partitions and large spaces. "Where do I draw?" Do you paint in a studio where the palette can be flat, or do you deal with uneven places in nature? The place of painting has a great influence on the choice. If you often go out to paint, you should like to seal the color palette to prevent paint leakage. "How do I mix my paint?" When you mix paint, do you use a small amount of paint, or add a little of this and that until you feel right? If your color palette is accurate or tends to mix in a small range, then a single color palette is your ideal choice. If you want to mix paint in a larger area, you will need a larger palette. "Do I want to save the color for later use?" Would you wash the palette after each painting, or would you let the paint dry and continue to use it with water next time you paint? If you like the former, you can choose a color palette that is easy to clean (not too large). If it is the latter, you will need a collapsible color palette so that the colors will not be inverted. It would be better if there was a cover to prevent dust from entering the paint. "What attracts me?" When you select color palettes in the store or online, which one looks cooler and attracts you more? Which one looks great for you? Listen to your intuition and take the time to find the right one for you. Try different options to see which is right for you! From landscapes to portraits, customizing your own watercolor palette allows you to bring out the best in each of your projects. Color mixing skills of watercolor Add water first, and add as much water as needed to the color palette. Take the paint into the water of the watercolor palette, and pay attention to a small amount for many times. The less water, the darker the color, and the more water, the lighter the color. Care of Palette and Brush Gently take the paint surface with a clean water pen, and do not waste the paint with too much force. Clean the pen (turn clockwise, do not poke), squeeze out the excess water, and hang it in a cool and ventilated place. Don't soak in water when not in use. After use, every time you wipe it with a cloth or toilet paper, it will make the color fresh and clean. Several common adjacent color combinations Red, Orange and Yellow: These three colors can represent the pictures of the sun, stars, sunset and flowers. The emotions corresponding to these three colors are warm, warm, hope and upward. Yellow-green-blue: The pictures they represent are: spring, buds, sky, ice and winter. Blue, Purple and Red: The corresponding expressions of these colors are mysterious, dreamy, and they can produce both warm and calm feelings. The picture with more blue elements is cold, and the picture with more red elements is warm. Tips for Creating Color Matching In order to make the picture more harmonious and gentle, we use the adjacent color as the main color, but it is easy to be dull without using the contrast color at all. The Ultimate Guide to Oil Brushes and How to Choose the Right One for Your Artwork

The Ultimate Guide to Oil Brushes and How to Choose the Right One for Your Artwork

The Ultimate Guide to Oil Brushes and How to Choose the Right One for Your Artwork Oil painting is an art form that has been around for centuries and requires the right tools to get the job done. Choosing the right oil brush can make all the difference in your artwork, so it's important to understand the different types of brushes available, how to select one that will best suit your needs, and the introduction on the best brands of oil brushes in the market. This guide will provide you with all the information you need on oil brushes and how to choose one that is perfect for your artwork. What are Oil Brushes The oil brushes are composed of three parts: brush hair, sleeve (generally made of metal) and pen holder. Common oil brushes heads include flat head, round head, pointed head, fan shape, etc. Traditional pen holders are usually made of wood. Ancient masters used wooden pens with round heads. Now the oil brushes also use transparent synthetic materials as pen holders. Oil brush: It is a special painting tool for oil painting. Generally, the pen holder is mostly made of wood, the brush hair is bristle, and there are also a few wolf-hair and chemical fiber. According to the shape of the pen head, there are 12 types of round head pen, flat head pen, fan-shaped pen, and typesetting pen, which are 1 # - 12 # from small to large, and there are also some large models. The oil brush plays the most basic role in the process of oil painting. A handy brush can bring interest to the artist's work. The selection of oil painting brush depends on the painting technique. Different textures, shapes and models of brushes have different functions. The Different Types of Oil Brushes & Their Uses The composition of brush hairs of different brands in different countries is different. For example, the pen made of animal hair and nylon will feel different when painting because of the different shapes, sizes and materials of the pen. When we first started to learn painting, we only need to prepare flat-headed brushes, round-headed brushes and line drawing brushes to basically meet the painting needs. The flat-headed brush is used to paint a large area of color, and the line marking brush is used to draw thin lines. Flat-headed brush (goat hair and nylon wool): It is characterized by relatively wide, suitable for drawing wide, drag-and-sweep strokes. Use the side peak of the flat head to draw a wider line. Oval brush: brush hair is squirrel hair. It is characterized by strong water absorption ability and good effect of pen tip aggregation. You can draw thin lines with the pen tip. You can also draw horizontally with the brush. Color flat-headed brush: the material is nylon, the interior is soft wool, and the outer layer is hard wool, which is strong and powerful. A sharp straight line can be drawn on the side of the flat head. Flat-headed brush (weasel hair and nylon hair): The waist of the pen is elastic and the tip of the pen is neat. Color brush (wool): is suitable for dry painting techniques, mainly used for hair and other details painting. Gold paint pen: other hairs are added in the middle of squirrel hair. Keep the pen tip smooth. Make painting more layered. Goat brush: It has a strong ability to absorb pigment. It is used for painting and wet painting techniques. Beginners can choose the three basic ones. Round head brush: red sable or weasel brush. The pen holder is thin and easy to hold. It is mostly used for drawing thin lines. Because the pen holder is relatively short, it is suitable for fast painting. More importantly, it is often used in dry pen techniques. Hazel brush (sable): It is commonly used in oil painting and acrylic painting. Its elastic waist is more suitable for detail processing. The hazel-shaped pen made of pig hair is hard, and the surface of the paper is easy to be damaged, so you should be careful when purchasing this kind of brush. In fact, nylon hair is used in the middle of the brush, but it can show the painting effect of the sable hair (black weasel hair) brush. Round head brush for watercolor painting (sable): The tip of the brush is relatively neat, can fully absorb pigment, and it is easier to move the brush. Self-absorbing brush is an epoch-making invention in Japan. A teacher in a primary school in Tokyo made children use a brush that can squeeze out ink. This is the prototype of the self-absorbent brush. It is convenient to finish the breakfast sketch in the hotel due to not using a pen washer. When you are abroad, you can use it as a parting gift. How to Choose the Right Brush for Your Painting Project Texture and Function Bristle brush: mostly bristle, with strong elasticity, firmness and strength. Coloring often leaves mane marks, which can pick up thick paint. It can be rubbed, rubbed and brushed. Generally, the brush hairs will not stick together. It is mainly used for thick and textured painting. Sable or badger hair brush: It is an advanced oil painting brush with moderate hardness and softness. It is soft and uniform when coloring, and has no trace of brush strokes. It is suitable for detailed depiction of the picture. Squirrel hair and monkey hair brush also belong to soft hair brush. Artificial hair brush: It has the characteristics of marten hair, badger hair and other advanced oil painting brushes. Artificial wool can be used to make different shapes of brush, which can not only soften local color, but also carry out detailed description. However, it cannot be soaked in water, and its hair is easy to deform in water. Shape and Function Round brush: The oldest oil painting brush. It has a blunt pen tip, which can be used to make more rounded and soft strokes; The small round oil painting pen can be used to draw lines, and the side front can produce a large area of blurred color halo, and can also be used for the dotting technique. Flat-headed brush: Flat-headed oil painting did not appear until the 19th century. It is used to create wide, drag-and-sweep brush strokes; Rough lines can be drawn on the side of the flat head; Turn the body of the pen to use the drag-and-sweep pen, which may cause uneven strokes. Hazel-shaped brush (sable hair brush): flat body and round head, also known as "cat tongue brush". It has the characteristics of both round head and flat brush, but it is difficult to control. It is a more elegant and smooth brush when expressing curved strokes. Fan brush: It is a new type of special oil painting brush, with sparse brush hair and flat fan shape. It is used for light sweeping and brushing in wet painting, or to soften too clear contours. Painters who like thin painting often use this brush. When using a fan-shaped pen to knead the color, you must keep it clean, otherwise it will hinder its dexterity. Model and Function The relationship between brush model and use is clearest. Large brushes are usually used to make large touch texture and lay large color blocks, while small brushes are usually used to draw thin lines and color points. The models of brushes sold on the market are different, and different brands and textures of brushes of the same model vary greatly. And the model division is also different, including 0~24#, 0~12#, 0~16#, etc. Hard brushes such as mane are complete in size and model, soft brushes such as sable generally do not have large brushes, while fan brushes (mostly mane or artificial hair) do not have small ones. Commission Paintings For Both Fun And Profit

Commission Paintings For Both Fun And Profit

Offer a special offering In terms of what I can provide for my clients, I have established my own speciality. The Dutch and Flemish painters of the 15th and 16th centuries considerably impacted my preference for watercolor still life painting. I therefore use the same technique when I paint the client's collection of items for commissions. I've come across a lot of people that have beautiful collections of silver, crystal, and other works of art (such as this lovely assortment below). My picture frequently turns into a prized heirloom since collectors occasionally sell, give away their collections to family members, or donate them to museums. Target potential customers Advertising in publications read by art collectors or others who are interested in the subjects of my paintings is one way I get commissions. Several examples include Fine Art Connoisseur, Art in America, and Garden and Gun. Even in the airline's in-flight magazine Hemispheres, I have placed advertisements. Sometimes people who have seen one of my gallery exhibitions or have heard about my work in a fine art newspaper ask me for things. The rest of the procedure is considerably simpler and more enjoyable when a rapport has been established with each client from the beginning. I've had the pleasure of meeting some really fascinating and unusual folks! Through word-of-mouth recommendations, these connections also serve as the finest source for new assignments. Determine the project's scope beforehand Prior agreement should be reached on the painting's theme, size, and pricing range. We first talk about what they want me to paint to make sure I can handle it given my area of expertise and my overall timetable. I don't paint small watercolors, so that's a size issue. I typically paint on a full sheet of paper or greater. For homes with extremely high ceilings, I've created some paintings the size of elephants! I often charge clients 10–20% more than what I would charge a gallery for a comparable work. For a second painting purchased at the same time, I provide a discount. You are selling directly to customers without paying gallery fees, which is one reason commission business is regarded as profitable. I don't request a deposit because I can sell the final product in a gallery if they reject it for some reason. However, I'm happy to say that nobody has yet turned down one of my paintings. I provide them with specifics about what I will require from them along with a portfolio of relevant prior work and a cost estimate. Costs frequently include painting supplies and photographs in addition to travel and overnight lodging. I pack my gear and head to their place for a photo session after they give their approval on the costs and specifics. Engage the customer in the process It can be challenging to conduct a photo session at the client's house, but it's an essential step in involving them in the development of the painting. Typically, I have to take over a bedroom, sometimes even the kitchen or living room, because I need a dark place in order to properly light the subject. Together, we might move some furniture or block some windows. I often choose three photographs to paint when I later study the photos on my computer to decide which ones will make the greatest watercolors. To accurately depict how the finished painting would appear, I crop the images and change the contrast. In order for the customer to select their favorite, I offer them these three photographs along with a description of what I admire about each one. This is a crucial stage in getting the client on board with the finished artwork. I send the client a progress photo as I finish each component of the painting so they can see how I work. They truly like getting a "behind the scenes" look and grow to adore the painting with each stage. Though I don't send them the finished product, I do want them to be surprised and ecstatic when they receive the actual artwork. Many of my customers have expressed how much pleasure it was to collaborate with me on their unique painting. Take expert pictures I use a digital camera with a 42x optical zoom on a sturdy tripod to photograph still life setup photos both at home and on the go. If a neutral backdrop is needed, I have 4' square white cotton and black velvet sheets available. I also have a few big sheets of white card stock and black construction paper. I make advantage of a mid-range telephoto setting to make sure the objects are level and upright. Wide-angle settings may make the things look distorted.   Contact the XIN BOWEN Team today for more details on our services.
